By Immune system boosters | Dec 22, 2009

Your immune system is the phalanx of mounted soldiers standing ready to defend your body from any and all invasion. With a glorious cry of “Attack!” these knights, otherwise known as white blood cells, thunder toward viruses, bacteria and other wicked invaders that try to lay your body low. We must never forget that as the host of these white blood cell knights, it is our job to nourish our defenders and keep them strong.

So what are some healthy snacks that can boost our immune system? This is a good question and the answer to it can be both simple and complex. Let’s keep the complicated science on the back burner and simply look at straightforward, practical tips for easy foods you can snack on and thus help our your system.

Fruits

There are myriad fruits that can actively assist and strengthen your immune system. However, not every fruit is great for everyone.

*Oranges. These are a classic immune system booster because of the Vitamin C in them, which is a wonderful anti-oxidant. Anti-oxidants are good because they counteract the oxidizing that is going in your body. In other words, your body is rusting on the inside and the anti-oxidants clean out that rust. This is an accurate depiction, although perhaps it is a little colorful. The truth is that oxidants weaken and deteriorate cells and tissue, and Vitamin C is a great anti-oxidant to boost your immune system.

So easy orange snacks include mikans, tangerines and tangelos. These are easy to peel and eat, and they even satisfy the sweet tooth. But oranges are not always the best thing for those with ‘O’ blood types.

*Cranberries. You can get any number of dried cranberries as a snack in stores, and they are even better anti-oxidants than oranges. They also have some other nice vitamins and nutrients that can make a difference in the functioning of your immune system. However, don’t get the cranberries that are dried and have sugar added. It is hard to find them without sugar, but it can be done. If you eat cranberries with sugar added, it is like adding 1 good thing to your system but then subtracting it right away. Sugar deteriorates and weakens your system quickly, and can be harmful to cells as well.

*Bananas. They have a lot of sugar, but if you don’t gorge on them, you are in good shape. These babies are rich in nutrients that your immune system loves. Potassium is just one of these. Don’t worry about bruising them, they get yummier!

*Apples. Yes, it is nearly true. An apple
